Towards Democratic Schools: Participation Practices Empowering Students and Schools

Target Group;

5th-8th grade students, teachers, managers and employees and families of pilot school.

Project’s Objectives;

  • General Objective: Contributing to Empower the democratic school culture in Turkey.
  • Specific Objective: Supporting stakeholders in gaining knowledge, skills and positive attitudes relating to democratic citizenship and human rights and developing and disseminating “participatory school” implementations together in order to facilitate complete and effective participation of children, guardians, teachers, school managers and employees, who are the natural stakeholders of schools, to the educational process and decision-making mechanisms.

Project’s Outcomes;

  • The situation was identified regarding the active participation of  children and school stakeholders in the educational process and decision-making mechanisms in the formal education in Turkey.
  • Good practices were revealed from Turkey and the world as relating to active participation of school stakeholders in the educational process and decision-making mechanisms.
  • A series of participatory school implementations, which are appropriate for the needs of the pilot schools and developed along with stakeholders, were launched.
  • A pool of knowledge, document and experience from MEB, school managers, teachers, children, their guardians and civil society can benefit for developing the democratic school culture.
